Mooney Installations (Rear Batteries) by Dean Ritter

The following hookup worked well for us but you should ask your A&P for his guidance.  A log book entry by an A&P is required.

Safety

Working around a battery can be hazardous. Wear safety glasses. If you have not worked around lead acid batteries, seek professional help.

TOOLS NEEDED:

  • Safety glasses
  • Wire cutters
  • Crimping tool
  • Drill motor
  • 3/16 inch drill bit
  • 5/16 inch drill bit
  • Insulated tool for removal of battery nuts
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Small ratchet set or wrenches
  • Optional: Battery Terminal Removal Tool (Available on our website)

Start by removing the battery access panel and set aside.

Remove the battery box cover and set it aside.

NOTE: Removal of the positive (+) cable first could cause a spark, especially if you’re using a metal tool that comes in contact with the battery box or other parts of the aircraft. A spark can cause an ignition source that could cause the battery to explode. Never stand directly over a battery and never smoke near a battery.

First remove the ground (-) cable, then remove the positive (+) cable and move both cables away from posts. You may want to purchase our "Battery Terminal Removal Tool" which is fully insulated. No sparks!

If your battery is not new, it should be removed and tested by your A&P. If the battery checks out charge it on the bench for a few days. You can use the "Quick Start Guide" on the side of the unit. Be sure to connect the temperature sensor to the negative post. The BatteyMINDer is guaranteed not to boil a good battery and the place to find out is on the bench not in the aircraft.

If your battery is new it is imperative that it is charged overnight to form the plates. Not doing so will shorten the life of the battery.

This is an excellent time to check the battery fluid level. Remember that the fluid is sulfuric acid (H2SO4) that can burn the skin and make a mess of your clothes; treat it with respect!! If the level is below the split ring it needs to be serviced. You must use distilled water. An easy way to add water is to fill a plastic water bottle with distilled water. Punch about a 1/16 inch hole in the top. Point the bottle toward the filler hole and squeeze until the water level is up to the split ring. Do not over fill. Inspect the cables and posts and clean if necessary.

Your kit came with a pigtail with clips. (Do not plug the power cord into an AC power source at this time) Connect the black clip to the negative (-) post of the battery and the red clip to the positive (+) post. Plug your BatteryMINDer into the pigtail. If you get a green light, your battery is good. If you do not get a green light, read the "Troubleshooting" portion of your manual again. When you get a green light, you can disconnect the pigtail, put it aside, and continue with the installation.

Next, drill a 5/16 inch hole in the hat shelf about 2 inches inboard. Install the grommet (provided) from below. Feed the cable (provided) through the grommet leaving 5 or 6 inches above the shelf.

Secure the charger cable to the other wires with cable ties (provided) as seen in the photo.

NOTE: We used an orange cable to make it more visible in the photos.

Now drill two 3/16 inch holes in the equipment rack. The location will depend on the amount of equipment your Mooney has. It may be necessary to mount your clamps on the leading edge of the rack. Mount the clamps with the hardware provided in the kit and thread the cable though. Tighten the clamps.

It’s time to connect the pigtail to the battery. Make sure the fuse is still in the bag. Feed the two loose ends through the cable grommet exiting the battery box. Connect the positive (+) cable to the red eyelet, and secure with the original washer and nut. Connect the negative (-) cable to the black eyelet with the original washer and nut. Cut the charger cable to length. Do not cut it too short. A small loop of extra cord is a good idea.

NOTE: Do not over tighten the battery post nuts. Our Battery Terminal Removal tool will help prevent over torque. If you have a Concord battery you must use a backup wrench on the battery post flats!

It is time to examine the charger cable. Note that one edge of the cable is smooth while the other has two or three ridges running with the cable. The smooth side is positive (+) and side with the ridges is negative (-).

Strip the wires with a ¼ of and inch exposed. Note that the pigtail butt connectors are coded with red (+) tubing while the negative (-) is black. Twist the exposed wire a little with your fingers and insert them one at a time in their respective butt connectors and crimp them together. Smooth to red (+) and ridges to black (-). Lightly tug on your connections to ensure they are crimped securely.

If everything checks out install the fuse and secure the cap.

In the image below, the temperature sensor is cable tied to the charger cord to sense the ambient temperature.

It's time to check out the hookup.

  1. Connect the charger to the battery and observe the green "Accepted" light.
  2. Select the charge rate "AGM."
  3. Select 4 amps for 24-volt units or 8 amps for 12-volt units.
  4. Plug the unit into an AC outlet. Observe the green Power On light. If the indicator light is red, the polarity is most likely reversed.*
You should have three green lights in the right column.

* To check the polarity, first disconnect the charger from AC and the new DC connector. Now try temporarily reversing the ring terminals on the battery and repeat the four (4) steps above. If everything is normal than the polarity was reversed. Now disconnect everything again. The kit has two extra butt connectors. Remove the fuse and reconnect the wires in reverse order using the new connectors. Hook up the battery ring terminals red to the positive post and black to the negative post. Replace the fuse.

By keeping the BatteryMINDer in use when your Mooney is not flying will increase the battery life and more importantly help maintain the battery capacity in the event of a failure of the charging system.

If you have any suggestions or recommendations please feel free to e-mail us with them. We want to make the installation as painless and safe as possible for the next guy.
