Piper Installations (Aft-located Batteries) by Dean Ritter

The following hook up worked well for us but you should ask your A&P for his guidance. An aircraft logbook entry by an A&P is required.

Safety

Working around a battery can be hazardous. Wear safety glasses. If you have not worked around lead acid batteries, seek professional help.

TOOLS NEEDED:

  • Safety glasses
  • Wire cutters
  • Crimping tool
  • Optional: Battery Terminal Removal Tool (Available on our website)

Remove the battery box cover and set it aside.

NOTE: Removal of the positive (+) cable first could cause a spark, especially if you’re using a metal tool that comes in contact with the battery box or other parts of the aircraft. A spark can cause an ignition source that could cause the battery to explode. Never stand directly over a battery and never smoke near a battery.

First remove the ground (-) cable, then remove the positive (+) cable and move both cables away from posts. You may want to purchase our "Battery Terminal Removal Tool" which is fully insulated. No sparks!

This is an excellent time to check the battery fluid level. Remember that the fluid is sulfuric acid (H2SO4) that can burn the skin and make a mess of your clothes; treat it with respect!! If the level is below the split ring it needs to be serviced. You must use distilled water. An easy way to add water is to fill a plastic water bottle with distilled water. Punch about a 1/16 inch hole in the top. Point the bottle toward the filler hole and squeeze until the water level is up to the split ring. Do not over fill. Inspect the cables and posts and clean if necessary.

Your kit came with a pigtail with clips. (Do not plug the power cord into an AC power source at this time) Connect the black clip to the negative (-) post of the battery and the red clip to the positive (+) post. Plug your BatteryMINDer into the pigtail. If you get a green light, your battery is good. If you do not get a green light, read the "Troubleshooting" portion of your manual again. When you get a green light, you can disconnect the pigtail, put it aside, and continue with the installation

NOTE: Remove the 3amp fuse from the holder and put it aside for now

We elected to use the permanent harness. The only change we had to make to the harness was to install a larger terminal on the positive lead to fit the battery positive post It’s time to connect the pigtail to the battery. Make sure the purple 3amp fuse is still in the bag.

We found the best solution for running the cable was to drill a hole in the back of the battery box and install a rubber grommet, which we fed the harness through. I sealed the harness at the grommet with high temperature RTV.

Feed the two loose ends through the cable grommet exiting the battery box. Connect the positive (+) cable to the red eyelet, and secure with the original washer and nut. Connect the negative (-) cable to the black eyelet with the original washer and nut. NOTE: Do not over tighten the battery post nuts. Our Battery Terminal Removal tool will help prevent over torque. We sealed the harness at the grommet with high temperature RTV. The pigtail was brought around the battery and into the luggage area.

At this point you may wish to have your mechanic inspect your installation and make an entry in your aircraft log book.

If everything checks out install the 3amp fuse and secure the cap.

Plug your BatteryMINDER to the charger cord but not the power cord. If you get a green light your good to go. If you do not get a green light and you have a good battery you may have connected the wires incorrectly (polarity reversed). Remember we already checked the battery with the pigtail with the clips. Recheck the connections and redo them if necessary.

Plug your BatterMINDer into an AC outlet and observe the red light. The green light will begin to blink when the battery is fully charged. If the green light does not begin blinking within 72 hours your battery may be sulfated. Follow the directions in the Instruction Booklet to de-sulfate the battery.

By keeping the BatteryMINDer in use when your Piper is not flying will increase the battery life and more importantly help maintain the battery capacity in the event of a failure of the charging system.

If you have any suggestions or recommendations please feel free to e-mail us with them. We want to make the installation as painless and safe as possible for the next guy.
